Dealing With Grief

Pet Memorial Garden Ideas: A Living Tribute to Your Pet

Pet Memorial Garden Ideas: Creating a Living Tribute to Your Dog or Cat

Summer is moving fast again, and every year around this time I hear from people who have been carrying the same quiet thought for months. They lost their dog or their cat, and they want to do something. Not a big thing. Just something that stays.

A pet memorial garden is that something.

My own dog, Kassie, passed away years ago, and I remember how strange it felt to have nowhere to put the grief. There was no place to visit. No spot to stand for a minute on my way to the car. That is the part nobody warns you about with pet loss, and it is the part a memorial garden quietly fixes.

You do not need a landscaping budget or a green thumb. A pet memorial garden can be one stone tucked beside a hydrangea. It can be a corner of the yard she used to sleep in. What makes it a memorial is not the size. It is that you chose it on purpose.

Start with the spot, not the plants

Before you buy a single thing, walk your yard and ask one question. Where will I actually see this?

A memorial garden you have to go looking for stops working after a few months. One you pass every morning keeps doing its job for years. So look for the view from your kitchen window. The stretch beside the back steps. The base of a tree where the shade already falls.

There is a second question worth asking, and it is a practical one. How much sun does that spot get, and how much time do you honestly want to spend maintaining it? A grieving person does not need a project that becomes another obligation. If you want something you can plant once and mostly leave alone, choose perennials and shrubs. If replanting each spring feels like a ritual you would look forward to, annuals are wonderful.

Many people also choose the spot their pet chose first. The sunny patch by the fence. The dirt under the porch. Those places already hold the memory. You are just marking them.

Choose pet-safe plants, especially if you still have animals at home

This is the part most memorial garden lists skip, and it matters.

A lot of the flowers people traditionally plant in memory gardens are toxic to dogs and cats. If you have a surviving pet, or a neighbor’s cat who wanders through, the plant you chose out of love can send someone to the emergency vet.

A few that are commonly recommended and are listed by the ASPCA as toxic to both dogs and cats:

  • Lily of the Valley, one of the more serious ones, affecting the heart
  • Daffodil, where the bulbs are the biggest risk
  • Chrysanthemum
  • Holly
  • Carnation, mild, but still on the list

Plants the ASPCA lists as non-toxic to dogs and cats, which make lovely memorial garden choices:

  • Roses
  • Snapdragons
  • Petunias
  • Camellias
  • Coral bells

Before you plant anything, it takes about ten seconds to check it against the ASPCA’s toxic and non-toxic plant database. I would rather you check and find out your favorite is fine than skip it and find out the hard way.

Flowers by month, if you want to mark a date

This was the idea people responded to most when I first wrote about pet memorial gardens, and I still love it. You choose the flower that represents the month your pet was born, or the month you said goodbye. It gives the garden a reason for being exactly what it is.

Here is the traditional list. I have marked the ones the ASPCA lists as toxic to pets so you can decide with full information.

Month Traditional flower Pet-safe?
January Carnation Toxic (mild)
February Violet, Primrose Check before planting
March Daffodil Toxic
April Daisy Check before planting
May Lily of the Valley Toxic
June Rose Non-toxic
July Larkspur, Water Lily, Sweet Pea Check before planting
August Gladiolus Check before planting
September Aster Check before planting
October Calendula, Dahlia Check before planting
November Chrysanthemum Toxic
December Holly, Poinsettia Toxic

If the flower for your month is on the toxic list and you still have pets, you have options. Plant it in a raised container your dog cannot reach. Or choose a pet-safe flower in the same color. The meaning lives in why you planted it, not in the botany.

Choose a pet memorial garden stone

The stone is what turns a garden into a memorial. Everything else is beautiful, but the stone is the one that says a name.

Our pet memorial garden stones are the pieces I get the most letters about, and I think it is because a name in stone does something a photograph cannot. Most are $38.00, and there are a few different directions you can go:

  • Personalized with your pet’s name. The Paw Prints On Our Hearts stones come in a dog version and a cat version. They measure 11 by 8 inches in weatherproof resin, and the engraving is included free.
  • Breed-specific. We carry stones for Westies, Beagles, Bassetts, Bichons, and Golden Retrievers. When the silhouette looks like your actual dog, it lands differently.
  • A simple engraved stone with a date, or a line you keep coming back to.

If you have your pet’s ashes, some families like keeping a keepsake close instead of, or alongside, the garden. Our pet cremation jewelry holds a small amount of ashes in sterling silver, and there are engraved wooden pet urns as well.

One more idea, and it costs almost nothing. Craft stores sell stepping stone kits. You mix the concrete, press your pet’s actual paw print or your child’s handprint into it, and let it set. It will not look professional. That is rather the point.

Add the small things that make it theirs

A garden becomes a memorial in the details.

A memorial wind chime gives the garden a sound, which matters more than people expect. Grief is often quiet, and a chime gives you something that responds. Solar lights along the edge mean the spot is still there at night. A flat rock where a cat used to sun herself. A small bench, if you have room to sit.

And keep your pet’s personality in mind above everything else. A garden for a dignified old cat should not look like a garden for a Lab who destroyed three couches. Let it be honest about who they were.

Plant it with your children

If your kids lost this pet too, invite them into the whole thing. Let them pick the flowers. Let them dig. Let them decide where the stone goes.

For most children, a pet is their first loss, and they are learning something enormous about how grief works. Giving them a job is one of the kindest things you can do, because it turns a feeling they cannot name into something their hands can do. I wrote more about that in creating a memorial garden with kids after pet loss.

It does not have to be finished

Here is what I would tell you if you were standing in front of me…

Do not wait until you have the whole plan. Do not wait for the perfect weekend or the right season. Put one stone down with your pet’s name on it and plant one thing beside it. You can add to it every year for the rest of the time you live in that house.

Grief does not resolve on a schedule, and neither does a garden. Both of them just keep going, and both of them get more beautiful the longer you tend them. There is a reason Scripture keeps returning to seeds and soil when it talks about hope. You put something in the ground you cannot see anymore, and you trust that it is not the end of it.

Your pet gave you years of showing up. A garden is a good way to show up back.

If you have a pet memorial garden of your own, I would love to see it. Post a picture in the comments.

How Death Lost Its Sting

Please read this before watching the video.

If you ever want to see a grown woman brought to her knees with tears overflowing, play this song on Easter Sunday! Listening to it as I’m writing this, the tears are trying to escape my eyes. What a beautiful and promising song.

April really packs a punch for me and my family. In April of different years, I lost two brothers – one young brother to suicide, and one brother (in-law) to a car accident. My pain was multiplied as I watched the mourning of parents and grandparents who never should have had to bury their young.

But in contrast, April bring us tulips and blooming Dogwoods, filled with such hope and promise for new beginnings. We joyfully watch young children frolic in the green grass in search of Easter eggs. We purchase brand new Easter dresses and place colorful bonnets on our child’s head. Then, there is the grand finale… Easter Sunday. But first, we must get through Good Friday.

That first Good Friday after my brother’s passing was one I’ll never forget. Death… Gloom… Sorrow… Pain… Mary’s tears… Jesus’ Crucifixion. With the fresh wounds of my recent loss (of my first brother), and again a few years later with my brother-in-law, the weight of Good Friday was too much to bare. My cross was too heavy to carry.

But, think about this… On Good Friday, almost two thousand years ago, Jesus carried that cross! To compare His burden to mine is far from my point and obviously would be extremely naive. He carried the world’s pain sorrow and on his back not even considering His own pain. How do I know this? He was God in the flesh and could have dropped that cross and showed His might at any point during his long journey to Golgatha.

I am not theologically trained nor feel the point of this post is to journey through the actual crucifixion day. If you want to read more about this, the following quote was taken from Faithward. Also, John 3:16 is a great reference as well.

“In the sacrifice of Jesus’ crucifixion we are shown the depths of God’s love for us and the lengths taken to save us from our sins….”

Again, I could never compare my burden to Jesus’, but Good Friday was a perfect parallel to my journey through pain and death. But, as I post on social media every year…

After my personal Good Friday journey, my hope was restored on Easter morning! Because I believe in Jesus, his death and resurrection, I can celebrate that death no longer has a hold on me. If we believe in Jesus, that he died for our sins to make us worthy of heaven, we will see our loved ones again. He could have dropped the cross and showed his might. But, instead, He endured the cross and He showed his LOVE. Therefore, death has lost its sting.

Now would be the perfect time to listen to the song above.

God Bless You!

Remember Me Offers Hope and Inspiration during the Holiday Season

Embracing the Christmas Holidays While Honoring Loss

The Christmas holidays are a time of joy, warmth, and togetherness. The twinkling lights, the aroma of baked goods, and the sound of laughter fill our homes and hearts. It’s a season that brings people closer, celebrating love and creating lasting memories. However, for many, the holidays can also be a poignant reminder of those we have lost. Amidst the festive cheer, there can be moments of deep reflection and sorrow, as we remember those who are no longer with us.

Navigating the holidays after losing a loved one can be challenging. The traditions and celebrations that once brought joy may now feel incomplete. It’s essential to acknowledge these feelings and find ways to honor the memories of those we miss. Here are a few heartfelt quotes to offer comfort and solace during this time:

“Those we love never truly leave us. There are things that death cannot touch.” – Jack Thorne

    • This quote reminds us that the essence of our loved ones lives on in our hearts and memories.

“What is lovely never dies, but passes into other loveliness.” – Thomas Bailey Aldrich

      • Reflecting on the enduring beauty of our loved ones’ spirits can bring peace and a sense of continuity.

“Although it’s difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.” – Author Unknown

        • Finding comfort in cherished memories can help ease the pain and bring a sense of closeness.

“Grief is in two parts. The first is loss. The second is the remaking of life.” – Anne Roiphe

          • Embracing the process of grief as a journey towards healing can be a powerful way to honor the past while moving forward.

“When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.” – Author Unknown

            • Treasuring the memories of our loved ones can keep their spirit alive during the holidays.

As we gather with family and friends this Christmas, let’s create space for both joy and remembrance. Lighting a candle, sharing stories, or dedicating a moment of silence can be meaningful ways to honor those we miss. By acknowledging our grief and cherishing our memories, we can find a balance that allows us to celebrate the present while holding the past close to our hearts.

May this holiday season bring you comfort, peace, and the warmth of cherished memories.

            Valentine’s Day Grief – Avoiding Cupid’s Arrow

For many of us, Cupid’s Arrow is leaving a different kind of mark on our hearts this Valentine’s Day.   Of all the holidays, Valentine’s Day can be the most difficult when dealing with the grief  from the loss of a loved one.

This year we would like to reach out to those who are dealing with loss due to the passing of their life’s partner or, sometimes just as difficult, loss due to divorce.  Most of us have felt the sting of Valentine’s Day at least once in our lifetime.   We realize that there was nothing anyone could say or do; it was simply a very difficult day.

This year, let’s just send a “hug” to someone in need.

Please join us on our Facebook Page  as we share hugs this Valentine’s Day.  For every hug you send, the recipient’s name will be entered into a drawing to receive a free “Hugs” necklace courtesy of Remember Me.

Even if your facebook friend doesn’t win the above “Hugging Heart” inspirational necklace, she will have received the free gift of a “hug” which will mean the world to her.   This year, let’s replace Cupid’s Arrow with just a simple “hug” to let them know you care.

Watch our facebook page more details.

            Warmest Regards,

            Debbie

            A Memorial Garden Brings Comfort

Spring is in the air, and this time each year, I think of those who are grieving and anticipating the hope that only Spring can bring!  I always encourage anyone who has lost a loved one, or a treasured pet, to consider creating a Memorial Garden in their backyard.  This is not only a great idea for just about anyone, but children can find so much peace having their own space to reflect on their memories.  Children also love coming up with ideas and actually participating in the process of planting a Memorial Garden.

Memorial Garden Stones come in many different shapes, sizes and price ranges.  They can be personalized with a name or sentiment.  These Memorial Garden Stones can be added to an existing garden or landscape creating a subtle sentiment.  Also, Memorial Garden Benches are becoming increasingly popular as they are incredibly functional and can be engraved with a personal sentiment.

Personalized Memorial Wind Chimes offer a beautiful sound along with an inscribed personal message.  As with the memorial stones, these can also be added to an existing garden or are well suited to hang on a front or back porch.  Memorial Wind Chimes are my personal favorite, as I’m hard pressed to come up with a more soothing memorial.

A Memorial Garden is not complete without beautiful flowers.  Below is a list of the different flowers and their meaning (those best suited for a memorial garden):

            Aracia – eternal love

            Aloe – grief

            Anemone – resurrection

Aster – God’s grace, love, blessings

            Balm – sympathy

            Bellflower – “thinking of you”

            Cypress – mourning, sorrow

            Daffodil – resurrection

            Forget-me-nots – memories

Fuchsia – harmony, healing for those who grieve, angels

            Geranium – comfort

Honeysuckle – devoted affection, bonds of love

Dealing with Loss on Valentine’s Day

While love is in the air and cupid’s arrow is in full swing, Valentine’s Day can be such a painful holiday for so many who are dealing with the grief of losing their spouse. It just doesn’t seem fair that so many are celebrating their love, while others are mourning their loss on this day, as well as many other holidays past and yet to come.

It is incredibly important to have a “plan” for Valentine’s Day. Keeping in mind that everyone grieves differently and handles loss in their own way, the following are just a few ideas to help make this day a bit more tolerable:

            1. Plan to avoid restaurants and social gathering places that might make you feel uncomfortable or lonely. If it’s possible to get together with some friends or family members, try to spend your time at their home or yours.

            2. Refocus your attention. Valentine’s Day is about love, and there are so many ways to express that love. Why not have a candlelight dinner with your kids. Just imagine the laughter that will evoke. Or if you have a dog, find a recipe for some pet friendly goodies and spoil your pet. Be creative. This will take your mind off of your feelings of loss.

            3. Perhaps you would like to reflect on your loved one. There’s nothing wrong with that. Start a journal and write down your thoughts. Write about some special memories that you have from past Valentine’s Days together. Hold on to those treasured memories as they can bring you great comfort. This could be a special time of reflection for you.

If you have struggled in the past on Valentine’s Day, please feel free to share how you were able to cope… this could really help someone today.

            Warmest Regards,

            Debbie
